High potential and gifted education

At Gunnedah Public we believe that high potential and gifted education goes beyond just excelling in traditional school subjects. It recognises that gifted learners often show strengths in a wide range of areas. For example, many gifted students have a strong interest and talent science, technology, creative arts and local cultural knowledge.

In the classroom

At Gunnedah Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.

  • Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
  • Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners
Across our School

Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.

  • Students deepen strengths through debating, competitions, STEM groups and chess competitions
  • Talent is celebrated through CAPERS and our Cultural Dance Group.
  • Leadership grows through SRC, Student Voice, and wellbeing is made visible with PBL awards.
  • Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with our Digital Den and Binaal room being open at breaks to explore robotics opportunities and social connection.
  • Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, training, coaching and house competitions that include differentiated PE.
Statewide

Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.

  • Students participate in opportunities such as, Dorothea Mackellar Poetry, PSSA sporting competitions and. Operation Art competion.
  • Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.

Connected to Culture

Through on-country learning and guided excursions, students engage directly with Aboriginal sites, native plants, artworks, and important meeting places, gaining firsthand knowledge of Gamilaraay history, traditional practices, and their significance to Indigenous communities. These immersive experiences encourage students to reflect on cultural traditions alongside contemporary perspectives, fostering respect, cultural awareness, and reconciliation. The Walaaybaa Hub serves as a vibrant cultural centre where students participate in weekly language lessons and hear stories shared by elders, building intergenerational connections and deepening their understanding of Aboriginal culture. Collaborative art activities and community engagement further enrich students’ appreciation for local heritage, strengthening their identity and promoting a school community grounded in respect, diversity, and the celebration of our unique cultural tapestry.

Supporting Scientific Learners

Our school features a specialised, well-equipped science lab that provides students with an engaging environment to explore the science syllabus in a hands-on manner. Led by a dedicated secondary science teacher, students have the opportunity to conduct experiments, investigate scientific concepts, and develop critical thinking skills. The lab is outfitted with modern equipment and resources, allowing for interactive learning experiences that spark curiosity and inspire a passion for science. By participating in experiments and practical activities, students deepen their understanding of key scientific principles while fostering collaboration and teamwork. This dynamic setting cultivates a lifelong love for learning and discovery in the field of science.

Technologically minded

The Digital Den is an innovative space at our school where students can explore the dynamic world of robotics and technology during their breaks. Students are encouraged to build structures and experiment with coding in a creative and collaborative environment. The Digital Den is also equipped with gaming equipment, promoting sportsmanship and catering to diverse interests among students. This engaging space fosters creativity and problem-solving skills and provides a fun and interactive way for students to connect with their peers and develop their technological skills. Join us in the Digital Den and unleash your imagination!
